Tim is an odd duck. At one of the times (under Bush) when the
PATRIOT act was being extended, he actually called the head
of the local ACLU -- Esther Patt at the time -- to ask her opinion.
She told him, and he voted against it, one of only a tiny handful
of Republicans to do so. This was naturally not a popular stance
among Republicans, but he did it anyway (though he certainly didn't
need to worry that his vote would scuttle the extension, which
always passes easily).
I'd be really happy to see someone better in that seat, certainly
on budget/public spending issues, but I don't think that
political convenience is all that motivates the guy.
