The only problem I have with applying what you are asserting to what Jenifer wrote is that it buys into the very same notion that the Supreme Court bought into when they declared that corporations are people and have the same rights as individual human beings, when the expenditure of moneys as an instrument of rational persuasion for political and economic positions philosophical points of view and or societal values is equated with speech by individuals to articulate advocacies of positions, points of views, or values, and when one considers all speech to be of equal currency on the face of it without any regard for concrete empirical exigent circumstances. Speech is not speech is speech is speech. Speech does have practical consequences and intent. One cannot ignore that fact and come out with an abstract standard or metric. Indeed, society sets restrictions on what is and what is not acceptable speech for given concrete types or classes of situation and sanctions those who violate those norms of behavior informally and formally via institutionalized legal means and otherwise. It is not permissible to yell fire in a crowded theater just for the sake of getting a reaction; just as it is not permissible to verbally threaten people with physical violence to get them to comply with one’s own personal desires and benefit without a good socially justifiable rationale to support such action.

If you don't believe in free speech for those you despise, you don't believe in it at all.

          Jenifer,

If you came up with the wording for a sign in support of Assange, I would be happy to make one.

Terrible tho' not unexpected news today (today's DN! will add to yr general depression about the state of things, tho' it's all stuff we need to know and know more about).
Anyhow. pls add support for Assange to signs and flyers to Saturday's demo.
(Took this off Peace and put it on Peace-discuss b/c it seemed more than an announcement).

                    Dear Peace,

There is a peace demonstration this Saturday, June 2nd, from 2pm to 4pm.
The local Occupy will join us, and they sometimes bring music.

Where? The corners of Neil Street and Main Street in downtown Champaign.
When? The first Saturday of every month. June 2, 2012 is this weekend.
                    Time? From 2pm to 4pm.

If you cannot make it, there are other things you can help us do. Feel
                    free to email me.
