[Peace-discuss] [SDaS] Re: the IMC assault, and the broadening of horizons

Wow, some really intelligent and touching emails on this otherwise rotten
thread. Thanks to Rachel, Julianne, Rafter, Ya'aqov, Dorothy & John, &c.
I guess I need to respond to this thread moreso than the actions this
thread is pretending to be about. I've found the macho grandstanding of
recent emails to be insufferable, and I would like to thank y'all for
speaking up for our shared values, for speaking up for everyone who wants
to make Urbana-Champaign (and the wider world) a more just & peaceful
place. // I want to put myself in opposition to the many social evils I
encounter on a daily basis: patriarchy, white supremacy, the regime of
capital, violence. As a person who enjoys certain privileges, it's been
necessary for folks who are wiser and more generous than myself to show me
where my blind spots are and what I've been missing out on. The
conversation about stopping rape didn't start one month ago, it's been
going on for a long, long time. A lot of us are very new to this
conversation, and I would like to humbly suggest that listening to the
conversations that have already been going on and looking at the complex,
dynamic responses to violence in our community is a better idea than
lashing out. (I'm echoing Rafter here.)

A question worth thinking about: what stands in the way of us creating the
beloved community?
