Certainly, the status of the Times has always been partly dependent upon its ability to convince sophisticated and thoughtful people that essential American goodness is somehow consistent with our efforts to govern the world economy, through force if necessary, even when immediate outcomes might lead some of us to believe otherwise, and even question the assumption of exceptionalism.
