Some upcoming events of interest to AWARE --
Wednesday *9/12 5:30pm Champaign Public Library*
*"Can Technology Serve Social Justice?"* lecture by Virginia Eubanks,
SUNY Albany
In this talk, Dr. Eubanks reflects on fifteen years of efforts
with three grassroots organizations--Our Knowledge, Our Power: Surviving
Welfare, the Popular Technology Workshops, and Women at the YWCA Making
Social Movement-- to make technology serve the needs of oppressed and
exploited people in the United States. (She was also interviewed on
WILL-AM Focus on Monday - archive at
http://audio01.will.illinois.edu/focus120910a.mp3
Among her comments - some had dreamed that simply making technology, and
tech education, available would overturn social inequality. This is not
borne out, for a variety of reasons she describes.)

Initiative of First Mennonite Church, will be full of song, prayer and

This year's International Day of Peace will focus on ceasefire,
which is appropriate as September 21st is also a day of Global
Ceasefire. A ceasefire can take many forms - laying down arms,
reconciliation between enemies, or even boycotting certain products and
brands -- and the brief program on the 21^st will allow time for
reflection, sharing and singing to celebrate the hope for ceasefire as
we recognize it in our world.
Friday *9/21 6pm Public forum on alternatives to incarceration*
This is part of the campaign against the plan to spend $20 million on
new jail cells. There are alternatives. There are better ways to spend
tax money. This will be a panel, including:

* Diana Zell of National Alliance on Mental Illness,
* Diane Lenik of ACLU, a rep from the Immiegration Forum and
