[Peace-discuss] let's press Durbin on Honduras repression before election

It turns out that Sen. Kaine was a Jesuit missionary in Honduras. So he's
willing to press the State Department not to sit on its butt while
candidates and activists of the political party of the most popular
presidential candidate get killed.

Merkley, Mikulski, Cardin, Tom Udall and Boxer are on this letter. We ought
to be able to get Durbin on.

Call Durbin's office at (202) 224-2152. And/or send an email to Durbin and
Kirk, using the link below.

Dear Supporter,

* Urge your Senators to support Tim Kaine in holding the State Department's
feet to the fire on human rights ahead of the *
*election in Honduras. *
Write Your Senators

Honduras has been plagued by violence and repression since the coup that
overthrew democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya in 2009. Honduran
journalists have regularly been targets of violence and threats, and *political
candidates have been killed*. [1]

*On November 24, Honduras is having a presidential election*. The
consistent front-runner in polls has been Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, the
wife of deposed former President Zelaya, who has emerged as a charismatic
leader in her own right. She is the candidate of LIBRE, a party formed out
of the post-coup resistance movement that unites a broad coalition
including labor, LGBTI activists, campesino leaders, and human rights
defenders. *At least eighteen LIBRE activists and candidates have been
killed since May 2012*. [2]

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia is circulating a letter to
Secretary of State Kerry, *demanding that the U.S.* – which has tremendous
influence in Honduras - *press the Government of Honduras to ensure the
right of all its citizens to peacefully assemble, campaign and vote*. So
far, Senators Merkley, Mikulski, Cardin, Tom Udall and Boxer have signed
Senator Kaine’s letter.

*Urge your Senators to stand up for democracy and human rights in Honduras
ahead of the election by signing Senator Kaine’s letter.*
