Subject: [socialistdiscussion] RE: Attack on Syria: The hypocrisy of Obama, Kerry and co.

It has been said that Obama would probably prefer to avoid an armed intervention. The state machine of course consists of several departments and layers with often conflicting interests. It would seem unlikely that the US armed forces have any interest in more target practice but perhaps the prospect of a new mini-Ottoman empire led by Turkey appeals to the US establishment as regional strong-arm men to keep the smaller states in order. Particularly because the knot of satellite states around Saudi Arabia is being unravelled and less stable. Turkey has an appetite for capitalist investment and with around 80 million, strong industry and well-equipped armed forces could easily arbitrate between the sunni and the shiite factions. At one time, the western imperialists favoured an Iraqi victory to prevent Iran becoming a large regional power. The Turkish variant which has only recently opened up may prove more feasible. And it is Turkey which is pushing for a military strike and possibly even an early ground invasion by their own troops.

The alternative to having a regional power could only remain an attempt at a balance of proxy power between the superpowers, with Russia embracing the mainly shiite influence in Syria, Iran and Lebanon and the US propping up Saudi, Qatar, Trucial states.

And so dangerous events begin to take shape. Following the US navy's doubling of its presence in the eastern Med, Russia has now moved warships into the same area while at the same time characterising any cruise missile strikes by the US as "aggression" and an illegal act under international law. Funny how the US slogans of yesterday have returned to bite them. In this constellation, if Obama does start to send cruise missiles onto Damascus. will Russia demand cessation and point their naval guns at the US warships? A careless phrase or action could send a spark into the powder kegs kept below decks. If we add to the mix a blow dealt by Assad to the US ally of Israel, then a regional war would move from possible to probable.

The billionaire John Kerry who also functions as the US Secretary of State is ready to teach the Syrian dictator Assad a lesson. He called Assad a "thug and a murderer", and says the US can’t let a dictator get away with such serious crimes; unless it’s one of the US’s dictators of course. "History will judge us all extraordinarily harshly if we turn a blind eye to a dictator's wanton use of weapons of mass destruction," Kerry added. Continued
