A report from Sweden,

I have wondered for several years now ; “ What the hell happened to Sweden “ !

Going from one of the most ; progressive, socially just, and neutral / anti-war country in the world, to what it has de-evolved to.

The answer is the international spread of the American neo-liberal corporate model of war, police brutality, and economic austerity.

Subject: [socialistdiscussion] political crices in Sweden

The political cricis that The Workers Party Group has predicted for a long time, in fact since before the recent election, have now been a reality.

The success för the rightwing racist party "The Swedish Democrats" in the election in September - when they became the third biggest political party and in reality also a third political block - have exposed the crices to everybody. Even for the stupidest of politicians and journalists in Sweden (and there are many).

Since the election in 1994 the Social Democrats, the political party that have dominated Swedish politics since the 30´s, have lost one third of it´s voters. This is more than a political cricis - this is a social movement. This "break up" from the labour movement started when the Social Democrats together with the Left party forced the hardest austerity program upon the society during the years from 1994 to 1998. That was the starting point for the "break up". First the social movement went to the Left party, that doubbled it´s sice in the 1998 election, although they were responsible for helping to push through 114 of the 126 billions of the austerity program.

The second movement in the society came during the elections of 2002, 2006 and 2010. Then this period was over the Social Democrts had lost one third of it´s voters, the main political right wing party in the bourgeoisie camp (The Moderates) was just as big as the Social Democrats and the right wing racist party had made it into the parliament in Sweden. This election also marked an all time low for the Social Democrats and an all time high for the Moderats and their Alliance. If you just look at the numbers (but social and political movements are more complicated than that) you could see that 90 per cent of the voters that the Social Democrats had lost during those 16 years (remember that it was one out of three) had gone to The Moderats the right wing racist party The Swedish Democrats.

In the election this year the so called Red-Green group of parties made no gains in the parliamentary election. Together they stayed just as low as in 2010. The real looser this time was the traditional bourgeoisie parties that had formed the "Alliance". And the biggest looser was "The Moderates". The voters from the Social Democrats, since 1994, had now made three very clear social and political moves:

- the first: mainly the the left party in 1998 (but also the move to the traditional right wing parties started that election),

- the second: during the elections of 2002, 2006, 2010 the traditional parties and the rightwing racist party had gotten
nearly all of the voters that the Social Democrats had lost,

- the third move: the workers left the traditional right wing parties and went to the rasist right wing party.

And what happened today was that that party declared that they shouldn´t support the budget of the coalition between the Social Democrats and the Greens (whis has the support of the Left party). Because the Alliance are smaller than the Red-Greens they van´t form a coalition by themselves eighter and the same goes for their budget. Both the Red-Greens and the Alliance needs the support from the Swedish Democrats, the third political block, to get their budget through the parliament. But no other party will have anything to do with the rasist rightwing party. And when the Red-greens and the traditional rightwing parties can´t agree they have manouvered themselves in a situation were the rasist right wing Swedish Democrats decides which budget that goes through in the parliament. And they have decided to support the bourgeoisie Alliance. The vote take place today, later, IF the Social Democrats and the Greens loose - and they will - then the Social Democratic Primeminister have to resign and the Red-Greens Goverment will get kicked out of office by the rasists.

We had already a permit from the police because this was what we expected even since before the election. We have invited the Social Democrtas, The Left Party (former stalinist) to a protest meeting together with us. We will also invite the Greens (because they will also be kicked out of office together with the Social Democrats). We don´t know if the Social Democratic Party will come to our protest meeting. But their youth legaue are very eager to come. And at it seems also the Left party. We think that the Greens will turn up, too. The trade Unions will hopefully come. But they will do as the Social Democrats. Any way, this protest is all our initiative, and it could just be the beginning of a new election campaign to the parliament. It could. But it is not the most likely outcome. But the situation will raise the political temperature in Sweden. And a very long political year for us will be longer. But to hell with that: will stop when the jobs done.

In Solidarity,

Janne.
