Two articles that to my mind make in different ways strong arguments against pro-profit health insurance, the first very personally tragic and the second more legalistic and logical. Since the ACA was written to extend the insurance companies role in health care decisions.
Basic results: money is shoveled to insurance companies and people are legally obligated to buy inadequate insurance even if they cannot afford it, or pay a fine, which results in people without health care and less money because of the fine.

The honest case for the ACA is slim-to-nonexistent but its supporters do not even try to make a case --which is telling in itself--as they merely point to the increased number of people with "coverage" without noting the monetary inadequacy of the coverage. As these two articles point out the first in a very heart-rending way coverage by for-profit insurers is inherently in conflict with the needs of patients, this result of the ACA is also conveniently swept under the rug by the pro-ACA crowd. Not only are the results of ACA meager, its high cost relative to results need to be highlighted as well as the fundamental reason for this result-- i.e., it was built on the dysfunctional pre-existing system of a for-profit health care system. Also, I do not think it is a stretch to point out that the ACA has given a boost to the privatization of health care such as we are seeing in Illinois.

Malcolm MacDougall’s insurance company delayed and denied cancer treatments despite his premiums being paid. The Affordable Care Act did nothing to save his life.

This second article is a bit more general critique of all for-profit insurance companies, not only health insurance ones. But a lot of the examples relate to health care including the auto insurance example.
