There will be a rally at the Hilton Garden Inn on the occasion of the
rightwing billionaire Bruce Rauner's visit to the local Republican Party.

[I looked up a few more details about this event that Ricky Baldwin shared
with us and thought I would share what I learned. -karen evans levy]

The local Republican Party is having their annual Lincoln Day Dinner
The keynote speaker will be Bruce Rauner, the GOP nominee for governor.
Saturday, May 10, 2014
Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign, IL // 1501 S. Neil Street
[Gather for the rally in the E14 parking lot at 10am (see below)]

Rauner's platform and record indicate that he:
* thinks that taxpayers cannot afford to pay for state pensions
* is anti-union and wants to create right-to-work zones
* believes that people are "improperly taking state health benefits"
* supports charter schools (non-union)
- - Rauner has given about $2.5 million to Noble Network of Charter Schools
in Chicago.
- - [On the positive side, 98% of Noble's students are minorities; 89% come
from low-income families.] But it is not know the percentage of minorities
and low-income which attend the school named after Rauner.
- - Noble Network of Charter Schools took in $106.8 million last year. That
includes $82.1 million from city and state taxpayers, $9 million in federal
taxes and $9.5 million in private donations. Noble has 8,850 students, so
that is $12,067 per student.
- - Rauner's family foundation has also given about $4 million to other
organizations that operate or support charter schools.
