Dear Students, Staff, Faculty, & Campus Community Members:

The events that have occurred in Ferguson, Missouri and the recent grand jury decision to not indict Officer Darren Wilson have gripped the country. We empathize with Mike Brown's family and loved ones, and we acknowledge that his life should be commemorated with peaceful protests and demonstrations. All lives matter. Nonetheless, we have to remind everyone #BlackLivesMatter because of several high-profile deaths of unarmed African American men and women due to law enforcement, including members of the LGBTQ community.

The University of Illinois cultural and resource centers are open to members of the U of I community to express their thoughts and opinions. We are here to listen, to be a resource, and offer support during this very difficult moment(s) in our country's history. This important moment will not be any different.

When students return from Fall Break, the LGBTRC and the other cultural and resource centers will have our doors open and space available to any member of the student body to express their thoughts and opinions in response to the decision.  We welcome you and any other member of the student body to come to the Center for healthy discourse and critical dialogue that allow us to develop strategies for action, and to plan a meaningful response. Additionally, two planned discussions are taking place:

Dialogue on Ferguson for White Allies
Monday, December 1, 2014 at 6:00 pm
Sponsored by Diversity & Social Justice Education
University YMCA Wahl Room (2nd floor, 1001 S. Wright St.)

Discussion with the Central Black Student Union (CBSU)
Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 6:00 pm
Florida Avenue Residence Hall (Oglesby Lounge)

In the face of increasing militarized police violence, the time to build community is now. Ferguson is everywhere. #BlackLivesMatter

MooAdditionally, please see OIIR’s response in regard to campus events to support students around Ferguson below.

In solidarity.

Resistance begins with people confronting pain, whether it’s theirs or somebody else’s, and wanting to do something to change it.
