  This responds to Tom O’Laughlin’s letter (8/22), “Real Scandal:Chasing off Wise as chancellor;” and to released emails revealing themachinations of the local 1 percent. Fittingly, O’Laughlin is identified withthe crackpot “Academy for Capitalism and Limited Government.”One day after publication ofO’Laughlin’s letter, it’s gone from the News-Gazette’swebsite, and for good reason. It concludes: “If a purification processis needed, Phyllis Wise would seem a bad beginning. A better place to start?How about Indian studies?” This follows a denigrating comment about StevenSalaita.O’Laughlin can’t get enoughgenocide against Indians, nor enough purification of white guilt through mascotminstrelsy. Now that the “Chief” is gone and Salaita beckons, O’Laughlin denigratesIndian Studies in crudely racist fashion. Not coincidentally, Salaita was hiredpartly to examine connections among colonial discourses about indigenouspeoples, including Palestinians. In terms of both Zionism and Manifest Destiny,this campus community provides ample opportunities. That’s partly why Salaitahad to be terminated and has to be vilified.The College of Medicinee-mails, pages 540-560, are astonishing. They involve Dr. Michele Mariscalo, currentDean of the COM, who did not support Wise’s proposal. Wise and her wealthycollaborators—Leonard, Lykins, Stephens, Fox, Habeeb—are participants in andwitnesses to condescending, sexist, and petulant comments about Dr. Mariscalo. Sheis “this lady,” “spunky,” a “newbie,” and a “1 track thinker.”These hyper-empowered andunethical individuals shamelessly use the university to enhance their egos andnet worth; but only because we let them.
