Thanks for this Carl, I need to absorb the terminology for what I view as "boats with weapons". Your statement:

"It does seem that the US military doctrine of "full spectrum dominance” nevertheless relies primarily on aircraft and now drones - which is why the 1,000 US bases (around the perimeter of Eurasia) are so important (and should be opposed)." is of most importance.Date: Tue, 29 Sep 2015 20:45:21 -0500

The US military from WWII has relied on aircraft carriers rather than battleships.
The US has ten in service and two in reserve; no other nation has more than two (and the only countries that have two are - remarkably enough - Italy and India!)

Some argue that recent advances in missile technology by Russia and China have actually made carriers obsolete - they’d be destroyed by missiles at the outset of hostilities.

Maybe my reference to "battleships" is inaccurate, but we do have military ships capable of attacking in the S. China sea. They aren't cargo or tourist ships.

Do you know that there are no Battleships in commission at present - all of them from the Iowa class, the last ones which were built in WW-II, are now museum ships - USS Iowa is in Los Angeles Harbor, USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor, USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, Virginia and USS New Jersey at Camden, New Jersey. -
They last served during the Gulf War in 1991.
