Green Party seeks more candidates
Wed, 01/13/2016 - 7:00am | The News-Gazette <http://www.news-gazette.com/users/digitalmedia>
The Prairie Green Party of Central Illinois offers a clear alternative to two-party corporate politics as usual. Our platform can be seen athttp://www.prairiegreenplatform.wordpress.com <http://www.prairiegreenplatform.wordpress.com/>.

In addition to my own candidacy for state Senate, we support the independent candidacy of Dr. David Gill for U.S. Congress in the 13th District and encourage his previous supporters to help gather the signatures necessary to gain a place on the ballot in spite of legal barriers supported by both major parties.

The Prairie Green Party also hopes to run a full slate of candidates for Champaign County Board.

Election law requires that a "new party" run a full slate of candidates for county board. First, a candidate must reside in the district in which she or he is running. Second, a candidate must collect 100-300 signatures from registered voters in that district, from mid-March through mid-June; exact requirements for each district will be provided by Gordy Hulten, Champaign County clerk.

Most important, if any one candidate receives 5 percent of the vote in November 2016, in the subsequent election the Green Party will be recognized as a major party and be subject to minimal signature requirements that presently apply to Democratic and Republican parties.

In the current political context, that would be significant progress for those wishing to lay the groundwork to challenge two-party politics as usual.

With a full slate, that goal would be easily achieved.

No significant expenses need be incurred during this process. I invite those interested to e-mail prairiegreensil at gmail.com <mailto:prairiegreensil at gmail.com>.
