There are some people theorizing that Trump is now attempting to bring N.K. into the US sphere of influence in order to further a wedge between Lil Kim and China. Any assumption that the Leader of N. Korea is not aware of the “duplicity” utilized by the US, is laughable. Any assumption that the Asian leaders are “stupid” or lacking knowledge of history and US hegemony shows our ignorance.

Even, Japan, a US proxy for many years, would like to out of the US sphere of influence, and has been nurturing Chinese favor by way of business interests for many years.

In short, the US is losing in our attempts to control Asia, but there is “nothing more dangerous than an army, when in retreat.”

I would add that, yes, Dowd steps back and is critical of Democrats, and is astute about their "dilemma" in relation to Trump's diplomacy. But of course this process has been driven from Korea itself, and it seems cynical, not just skeptical, not to emphasize that. But of course Kristoff is worse, in terms of his own human rights hypocrisy.

Here we have one of the most positive things in years, and Dowd is more concerned about being snarky then about objectively analyzing what Trump may have had or not had to do with it, and how she herself might understand the situation in a way that would, in fair and realistic as well as hopeful terms, help to move the process forward. The liberal establishment does NOT want Trump to be able to take credit for any of this, fairly or unfairly, for reasons that have to do with the general geopolitics of the ruling class, and the specific ambitions of the Democratic Party.

I haven't read the Kristoff piece yet, but how are you reading Dowd as cynically opposing peace between the Koreas? Look, she says:

But for the moment, President Trump’s peculiar form of diplomacy — a combination of belligerence, bluster, name-calling and ignorance of history — has somehow produced a possible breakthrough in North Korea that eluded his predecessors.
She's pointing out that Trump is, despite frantic opposition, actually getting this right - she seems be not at all ironic in saying that if successful, Trump unlike Kissinger would actually deserve a Nobel Peace Prize - and also pointing out that the Dems are hanging themselves if they think that all they need to be is anti-Trump. This sounds pretty good to me. What am I missing?

The viciousness and cynicism of War Party liberals is on full display (Kristoff, Dowd) on the NYT op-ed page. God forbid peace should break out on Trump's watch.
