Scott Ritter, former UN weapons inspector in Iraq, gave a powerful talk
against the War on terror at last Friday Forum entitled: "Understanding
the Roots of Terrorism: Iraq as Case Study"

Here's some background on the talk:

On April 29th, Scott Ritter, former Major in the US Marines and former
chief UN Weapons Inspector in Iraq, spoke to a packed house at the
University YMCA on UI campus. In 1998 Ritter resigned in frustration from
his position as head of a UN weapons inspection team which was given the
task of seeking out and dismantling all of Iraq's weapons of mass
destruction.

The UN's plan was to eradicate these weapons and then lift the economic
sanctions against Iraq. Shortly after Ritter resigned, the US and Britain
initiated a bombing campaign of Iraq using intelligence gained during the
inspections which signaled the end of the weapons inspections and
curtailed the plan to lift sanctions. Economic sanctions have been in
place for 12 years, since the US lead war against Iraq began. The
sanctions are responsible for the death of 1.4 million Iraqis, nearly one
tenth of the original population of Iraq.

Admidst recent hawkish cries from Washington to expand the War on
Terrorism to an attack on Iraq, Ritter offered a candid, critical,
perspective of US Foreign Policy and the "War on Terrorism."
