John Paul
Wednesday, July 10th, 7pm at the Independent Media Center
218 W. Main, Urbana.
Meet author and provocative political analyst Steven Hill as he discusses
and signs copies of his new book, "Fixing Elections: The Failure of
America's Winner-Take-All Politics" published by Routledge
this month.
Was the lesson of Florida punch-cards that we need better voting machines,
or that there's something deeply wrong with a system where the candidate
with fewer votes wins the office? Fixing Elections shows why it's not just
the Electoral College that's outdated, but our entire 18th-century Winner
Take All political system, including the way we elect our legislatures.
Illinois plays a special part in his analysis, as our use of cumulative
voting in three-person districts for the state House from 1870-1980
represented more people than traditional Winner Take All elections where
only one person wins. Steve was the campaign manager of the successful
campaign in March to implement instant runoff voting in San Francisco.
