[ Professor Allen (Ph.D., Princeton University, 1999) joined the department
in 2001. He has published several articles on social criticism and on
problems of "transitional justice". He is currently revising his
dissertation, "Inside and Outside: Social Criticism and the Idea of the
Self" for publication. He is also working on a book project, Injustice and
Truth Commissions, which examines moral challenges associated with
transitions from oppressive rule. Allen has broad interests in applied
political theory and in contemporary and modern political thought.

Research involves:
Theories of social criticism; liberalism and its critics; problems of
justice in democratic transitions; moral psychology; nineteenth century
German political thought; theories of criminal justice.
Teaching covers:
Political theory: contemporary political and social thought; modern
political thought; ancient and medieval political thought; democratic
theory; ethics and public affairs; philosophy of the social sciences. In
comparative politics: problems of democratization and consolidation;
political culture; South African politics; the politics of sub-Saharan Africa.
