events of the week

--people showed up at tim johnson's town hall meeting and brought up
issues, especially the war on iraq and the need for health care
reform. most people in the room oppose the invasion of iraq -- a petition
was circulated which indicated that even most of the non-aware attendees
oppose invasion. tim refused to take a position on the issue, claiming
that he didn't have enough information.
--at quad day rob stared at the rotc with a "world bank credit card" sign
and his mouth hanging open, andrew trull dressed up as pebbles flintstone
and informed people of permaculture, kathryn matzen wore stilts and held
barbies in nooses from her fingers, with her friend beth reaching for them
from the ground. it was strange, and so uiuc students responded by
discussing amongst themselves.
--aware sent someone to moveon talk in chicago with senators durbin and
fitzgerald but the senators didn't show up. they sent their cheifs of
staff instead. people came prepared to speak passionately with senators
and they instead talked to cheifs of staff who were not revealing the
senators' positions. the cheifs of staff claimed that the senators are
independently minded, which is laughable.

upcoming events

9/2 - tomorrow - afl/cio labor day parade leaving west side park at
10am. carl estabrook invites people to come along and bring anti-war signs
-- labor day is about anti-war too. or you can come at 9am and make a
sign.
      - tomorrow - there will be an art and revolution session at the
school for designing a society from 5pm to 8pm to make signs for the
upcoming events. refreshments provided. the school is located at 409 n
race st. in urbana.

9/3 - tuesday - there is an open house event at the school for designing a
society at 6pm. in case you didn't get a chance to check out the school on
the previous evening. it is at 409 n race st. in urbana.

9/8 - sunday - 11am antiwar protest in front of  bears fans on the south
side of kessel park on kirby in champaign.
      - sunday - 1.30pm aware hosts an anti-war teach-in at the mckinley
foundation up to 4.30pm and people are invited to arrive at 1.00pm to help
set up. jeff guntzel from voices in the wilderness, theaterperson robert
hostetter, and activist ahmed bensouda will be speaking at the event. then 
participants will break into discussion groups. we will break promptly at
4.30 because...
      - sunday - 5.00pm aware weekly meeting will happen at its regular
time and place -- at the imc in urbana
      - sunday - 5.-9.00pm there is an open house at the local islamic
center, see www.cimic.org for more...

9/11 - tuesday - at noon, people will congregate on the quad to protest
the war on iraq while the university does a memorial service. then at 1pm
people will march to the fbi office in champaign and continue
protesting. bring a sign and a friend.

direct action - the 9-11 protest and march is next tuesday. see flyers for

outreach committee - there are fantastic flyers which the group has made 
which you can find at all the upcoming events.
teachin group - the teachin is next sunday. see above comments or the
flyers for info

we'll do a "phone tree" calling towards next weekend to ensure that people
know about the upcoming events.

and i'll work on getting a [shift] key for my keyboard.
