Ysaye Barnwell
Guest-in-Residence at Unit One/Allen Hall 9/15-9/21

Ysaye Barnwell has performed with the internationally acclaimed a cappella
quintet, Sweet Honey In The Rock since 1979. She appears as a vocalist
(and/or instrumentalist) on more than twenty-five recordings with Sweet
Honey as well as with other artists. She has worked as a commissioned
composer on numerous and varied projects, all outgrowths of her
understanding of creative arts as inextricably bound to society. Barnwell
holds a doctorate in Speech Pathology, has post-doctoral experience in
Public Health, and has administered D.C.-based community health projects in
computer technology and the arts. Her residency is in conjunction with
performances by Sweet Honey in the Rock at Krannert Center for the
Performing Arts.

American Tradition

Tuesday, September 17
7:00pm - An Introduction to the Music of Sweet Honey in the Rock
8:30pm - Songwriting 101 - the fundamentals, participatory - we will write a
group song (in the South Rec Room)

Wednesday, September 18
7:00pm - African American History Through Song: A participatory workshop

Thursday, September 19
7:00pm - Music of the Civil Rights Movement
8:30pm - The Business of Music: songwriting/composing, recording,
copyrighting/licensing, publishing (in the South Rec Room)

All programs are open to the public and take place in the Main Lounge of
Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory, Urbana, unless noted. Call 333-8351 for more
