AWARE's working group on nonviolence will show a
segment of the civil rights video, A Force More
Powerful, at the IMC on Sun., May 4 at 4 PM preceding
the AWARE meeting. The video documents the use of
nonviolent action through which sit-ins desegregated
restaurants and stores in Nashville, TN in the 1960s.
It shows how Rev. Lawson trained African-American
college students in the disciplines of civil
disobedience, which he had learned by studying
Gandhi's philosophy and methods in India. Extensive
film footage of the training, sit-ins, subsequent
jailings and court cases is presented, along with
recent interviews with Rev. Lawson, the former
students, and white Nashvillians. It is a vivid,
thrilling success story. A discussion on the use of
nonviolent action in the anti-war movement will follow
the 30-minute video presentation.
