Dear respondents:

In the last three days several hundred of you have responded favorably to the Afro-American Studies and Research Program's resolution on trustee Carroll and the News Gazette. In light of this overwhelming response it seems appropriate to use the resolution beyond delivering it to the News Gazette. The group which recently put together an ad supporting Chancellor Cantor has also helped to initiate an advertisement that will appear in the Daily Illini endorsing Afro's resolution. That ad will appear next week. The deadline for submitting copy of the ad is Friday of this week. Please immediately respond if your name may be used with the ad below.

HERE's THE TEXT FOR THE AD:

With respect for Dr. Frances Carroll's courageous initiative to resolve the divisive issue of Chief Illiniwek through the Board of Trustees, we the undersigned endorse the following resolution recently approved by the Afro-American Studies and Research Program:

WHEREAS Loren Tate, the featured sports journalist at the NEWS-GAZETTE, recently argued that it was improper for African American Board of Trustees member Dr. Frances Carroll to fully participate in debates over an issue of importance to the University of Illinois due to her race, and

WHEREAS the University of Illinois is a great university serving all of the people of Illinois, and

WHEREAS students, faculty and staff of color, who are vital to the current successes and future possibilities of University of Illinois, will accept no questioning of their "presence" on campus or limitations of their right to discuss any issue,

We therefore request that Loren Tate and NEWS-GAZETTE management issue a full and speedy apology to the university community and especially to Dr. Carroll.
