This week's guest on Media Matters is Bernie Sanders, Independent congressman from Vermont. Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, from 1981 to 1989, Sanders won his first term to the House of Representatives in 1990 -- the first Independent elected to the house in 40 years and the only one ever elected to four consecutive terms. During his time in office, Congressman Sanders has been a progressive stalwart, fighting for legislation on veterans' benefits, workers' rights and environmental protections. In 1991 he helped found the Progressive Caucus. Most recently, he has been leading the charge against media concentration with legislation that would overturn the FCC's recent decision to lift media ownership caps.
