I am so happy there will be a sign making party this weekend, though I will
be out of town and unable to attend. At P4P last week, I was struck by the
sheer monotony of the red white blue on the other side of the street and
thought the best way to counter the angry, conformist, 'normative
patriotism' out there is to present a vision of diversity and beauty, a
celebration of the complexity of life and the healing quality of compassion.
To that end I'd like to see more well-painted, personal signs, costumes,
streamers, glitter, bubbles, etc. out there. The music is already a major
step in this direction, but it's mostly for ourselves rather than the
motorists
or anti-peace folks.
As for a celebratory atmosphere being inappropriate given the scale of
destruction currently underway, perhaps the best way to mourn the dead
is to recognize how sweet, beautiful, and fragile life is.
