Ben Cox was one of the 13 original Freedom Riders of the Civil Rights Movement
who sought to desegregate public transportation and whose efforts spawned
Freedom Summer and the eventual desegregation of public travel. In the early
years of the civil rights movement, Mr. Cox was field secretary for CORE (the
Congress on Racial Equality). He traveled to various universities teaching
students to use non-violent protest techniques to achieve social change. Mr.
Cox also has a 1965 Supreme Court decision in his favor, Cox vs. Louisiana,
which is widely considered to be a landmark decision regarding free speech and
free assembly.
