Dear Lynn Sprout supporters,

The Urbana Human Relations Commission will finally hold hearings to determine the penalty against Carle Foundation Hospital for breaking Urbana's Human Rights ordinance by discriminating against former pediatric nurse manager Lynn Sprout by firing her after she came out while caring for her dying same-sex partner of 18 years. The Commission found the hospital guilty of discrimination late last year.

This public hearing will take place at 5:30pm Tuesday-Thursday, April 19-21, in Urbana City Hall, 400 S. Vine Street in Urbana. It is important that Lynn's supporters be there to witness the hearing and provide moral support to Lynn.

Lynn has always wanted three things: her job back, back pay from the time of firing to the time or rehiring, and a change in Carle's policy to grant family medical leave and bereavement leave to employees in same-sex domestic partnerships.

The Commission cannot make Carle change its policy, but external pressure -- Lynn's lawsuit and the persistent grassroots movement that has been putting public pressure on the hospital to do the right thing -- along with some courageous employees working inside Carle has resulted in a policy change at the Clinic. This is a one step forward. The Hospital still has not made such a change in its policies.

Lawyers for Carle Hospital will attempt to smear Lynn and her reputation at next week's hearing to avoid a massive penalty for having been found guilty of discrimination. This will be a very difficult time for Lynn who has endured a nearly three year struggle with the hospital.

Please attend if you can and bring a friend.

Thanks,

Kimberlie

p.s. Some of you will be staffing the Rainbow Coffee House on Tuesday the 19th. If you can recruit someone to sit at the hearing in your place, that would be great!!!
