Don't forget to catch Elaine Brown this week! And then we have do-it-yourself techies/Wired contributors/futurists/webloggers/fringe culture explorers Mark Frauenfelder and David Pescovitz in-residence. Technology and culture writers, David Pescovitz and Mark Frauenfelder will be Guests-in-Residence at Unit One/Allen Hall October 16 – October 20. They will be speaking and doing workshops every night of their residency. All events are open to the public and take place in the South Rec room of Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory, Urbana.

About Mark and David: 


Mark Frauenfelder is a weblogger, illustrator, editor, and journalist. He is editor-in-chief of MAKE, a do-it-yourself technology magazine, and co-editor and founder of the collaborative weblog Boing Boing which has 300,000 daily visitors. He was an editor at Wired from 1993-1998 and was the founding editor-in-chief of Wired Online. His articles about technology and culture have appeared in Wired magazine, The New York Times Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, Popular Science, MIT Technology Review, Playboy, Business 2.0 and The Industry Standard. Frauenfelder co-edited The Happy Mutant Handbook and wrote and illustrated The Mad Professor, a book of science experiments for kids. He also wrote The Computer: An Illustrated History, and The World's Worst: A Guide to the Most Disgusting, Hideous, Inept and Dangerous, People, Places and Things on Earth. He designed the CD cover and video box cover for Billy Idol's "Cyberpunk" album. He is also a ukulele fanatic.

 

David Pescovitz thinks and writes about technology, science, and culture. He is the writer-in-residence for UC Berkeley's College of Engineering and the Berkeley Sciences, co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing, and an affiliate of the Institute for the Future, a non-profit research organization in Palo Alto. He is the co-author of the book Reality Check, based on his long- running futurist column in Wired magazine where he is still a contributing writer. Pescovitz has also written for Scientific American, Popular Science, MAKE, Business 2.0, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and New Scientist, among many other publications. In 2002, he won the Foresight Prize in Communication, recognizing excellence in educating the public and research community about nanotechnology and other emerging technologies. His explorations of fringe culture are featured in the Happy Mutant Handbook and The 'Zine Reader.
