Eyes Wide Open Illinois
An exhibit created by American Friends Service committee which includes 77 pairs of empty combat boots representing each Illinois soldier who has died in Iraq, as well as a memorial to the thousands of Iraqis who have died during the conflict.  (Co-sponsored by 25 local community and religious groups and staffed by over 50 local volunteers.)  Showing at the following locations:
Friday, 9/16 from 8am - 4pm / UI QUAD (English Building Lawn)
Saturday, 9/17 from 10am - 6pm at West Side Park in downtown Champaign
Sunday, 9/18 from 2pm - 6pm at Douglass Park in Champaign
Monday, 9/19 from 10am - 4pm at Carle Park in Urbana
 
 
Creating Peaceful Tomorrows: Journeys of Loss & Hope from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib & Beyond      (a series of events organized by local religious and community groups)

Friday, Sept. 16 at noon / Campus YMCA (1001 S. Wright St. in Champaign) Other Lands Have Dreams: from Baghdad to Pekin Prison
Kathy Kelly, author, activist and co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness, will discuss her work as a peace activist and the impact she has had through her 30 years of education and nonviolent direct action in the US and abroad. 

Friday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 pm / Campus YMCA (1001 S. Wright St. in Champaign)Creating Peaceful Tomorrows: An Evening of Commemoration and Critique – Featuring Kathy Kelly of Voices in the Wilderness and John Titus of Peaceful Tomorrows (an organization founded by those who lost loved ones in the September 11 attacks and who now advocate for peace).                                                                                                   - A performance by the creative musical duo the Prince Myshkins, who combine biting satire and great musicianship.                                                   - An opportunity to view Eyes Wide Open, the American Friends Service Committee’s widely acclaimed exhibit on the human cost of the Iraq War.

Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10am - noon / Lewis Lounge in the Newman Center (604 E. Armory in Champaign – enter through the 6th St. entrance)                          Peacemaking in a Troubled World: How My Faith Informs My Commitment to Social Justice                                                                                                                                   A panel discussion, organized by local churches, featuring Kathy Kelly of Voices in the Wilderness, John Titus of Peaceful Tomorrows, Ann Burger (Presbyterian pastor), Robert McKim (UI Professor of Religious Studies and Philosophy), and Reverend Ben Elton Cox, Sr, (retired pastor and one of the original Freedom Riders).
