This is a non-AWARE event, but if anyone is interested in helping with
the Mother's Day Voices for Peace, ...

Subject: Voices For Peace
Hi folks,

I'm emailing folks who've expressed an interest in the event "Voices for
Peace" (tentative working name!). I'm posting some notes from our
planning meeting on Tuesday so everyone can get a feel for how the event
is taking shape. No kidding, it is shaping up to be a really moving
program that will educate and motivate.

I imagine I'll make a few mistakes or leave some things out and I hope
other folks at the meeting will correct these notes. *Our next meeting
will be Tuesday, April 11th at 12:15 at the Community United Church of
Christ (805 S 6th Street in Champaign).*

- This is event will take place on *Thursday, May 4th at 7pm at the
Community United Church of Christ (805 S. 6th Street, Champaign)*.

- *We'll hopefully have actors from the Station Theater, and the Theater
Departments at UI and Parkland who will do dramatic readings of brief
pieces of the words of Christian Peacemakers. * We hope to highlight the
Christian tradition of calling for peace and justice, in part to remind
folks that the exploitation of Christianity for right wing war-mongering
goes against the many Christian voices who have called for compassion
(including Jesus, by the way).

*We think it would work best to give a brief bio of each Christian
peacemaker, then let the performer read a 2 or 3 minute excerpt of the
person's words. We anticipate needing 10 -12 pieces* - We don't want
the program to run much over an hour. Mike has found 6 great pieces
already including the original call for Mother's Day as a peace holiday,
and the words of Martin Luther King and Oscar Romero, among others.
*All of us are going to try to find another couple pieces and post them
to this list so that we have a nice selection to work with at our next
meeting.*
**
*- *Mike suggests singing *"Finlandia"* at the end of the program - a
good peace hymn.
**
- Dan has done some great work getting several *co-sponsors* for the
event and others continue to sign on.

- *Publicity:* Shelley has good contacts for publicity at the News
Gazette; Dan has a spot planned for the WRFU radio station program which
he participates in. Carol has contacts at WEFT and WILL, and may also
work with Shelley on getting press releases out to TV, print and radio.

- *We hope to come up with a brilliant, provocative and moving name for
the event. Anyone??*

- We didn't get a chance to talk in depth about two issues: showing a
Jackson Browne music *video*... and giving folks a chance to assemble
*Care Packages* for those in the military that might include a pamphlet
on obtaining CO status. Those issues are both on the table for next time.

So - as you can see, there's still work to do, plans to make. Please
feel free to post ideas, comments, corrections. And see you next Tuesday.

Warmly,
Carol Inskeep
