We should consider joining in this effort of United for Peace and
Justice, so I suggest we take it up at our next meeting. It goes well
with our request to the Urbana City Council to take up the resolution
on ending the occupation. --mkb

> For the third anniversary of the Iraq War, United for Peace and
> Justice is encouraging our member groups to place advertisements in
> local newspapers in your communities. It's a great way to bring our
> message -- end the war in Iraq and bring all the troops home now --
> to a wide audience, and to build the base of your local anti-war
> group.
>
> While advertisements in national dailies like The New York Times or
> The Washington Post can cost tens of thousands of dollars, ads in
> local papers -- especially weekly papers -- can be surprisingly
> affordable. Other options include campus or school newspapers and
> newspapers targeting particular constituencies (e.g., African
> American, labor, GLBT). You may find that, with a modest
> fundraising effort, your group can run ads in more than one
> publication.
>
> 1) Research ad prices
> Call the advertising department of your local paper(s) to find out
> what ads of different sizes will cost. If you're contacting a daily
> newspaper in your area, be sure to ask about special prices for any
> more localized weekly sections. Find out the deadlines for
> reserving advertising space and for submitting final copy.
>
> 2) Determine the text of your ad
> UFPJ has drafted a text for the ads, which you will find below. You
> may wish to modify this text to meet your local needs, but there is
> one strong advantage to using our text. We are currently
> circulating it to a number of nationally prominent people and
> asking them to sign on; if you use this text, you may include these
> names in your final printed ad. If you use different text you will
> not be able to use these names.
>
> 3) Gather local signers for your ad
> Circulate this text to members of your local group, as well as
> other community leeaders, and ask them to sign on. An easy way to
> raise the money to pay for the ad is to ask for a small
> contribution -- $5, $10, or $25 -- to be listed as a signer.
>
> 4) Submit final copy with signers to the newspaper
> Our template below includes spaces for you to include contact
> information for your local group, as well as a coupon so that
> sympathetic readers can contact you, get on your mailing list, and/
> or make donations to your group.
>
> 5) Contact UFPJ about your advertisement
> Let us know by email (info at unitedforpeace.org) where you are
> running ad(s), so we can tally how many ads are being run
> nationwide. Also, please mail us a copy of your printed
> advertisement: UFPJ, P.O. Box 607, Times Square Station, New York,
> NY 10108

> TEXT OF 3RD ANNIVERSARY AD -
>
> MARCH 19th, 2006.
> Three Years Too Many.
>
> The third anniversary of a war based on lies.
>
> It is time to come to our senses, rebuild the respect of the
> international community, rebuild our communities.
>
> It is time to end the war against Iraq.
>
> It is time to bring all the troops home!
>
> The great majority of people in the United States, and around the
> world agree: THIS WAR NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED.
>
> There were no weapons of mass destruction, there was no imminent
> threat to the United States, there was no link between Saddam
> Hussein and the 9/11 attacks.
>
> Members of Congress, retired generals and state department
> officials, newspaper editorial boards, families of soldiers,
> teachers, doctors, lawyers, Republicans and Democrats alike ---
> people from all walks of life want the truth and an end to the
> nightmare of a senseless war without winners.
>
> But the nightmare continues.
>
> The Iraq war has cost well over $200 billion in U.S. taxpayer
> money, and the Bush administration will soon be asking for tens of
> billions more.
>
> Yet the people of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama still haven’t
> received the money and resources they need to begin to recover from
> Hurricane Katrina.
>
> Three years of war have resulted in the deaths of more than 2,200
> U.S. service people and thousands who have come home with ghastly
> wounds to their bodies and their souls -- wounds they will carry
> for the rest of their lives.
>
> The number of Iraqis killed are estimated to be in the tens of
> thousands; more people dying every day. The schools, hospitals and
> homes hard hit by the U.S. military have not been rebuilt.
>
> Yet the Bush Administration still can't give us a straight answer
> about why it invaded Iraq and continues the war and occupation.
>
> Let us work to make this the last anniversary of this senseless
> war. Let this travesty, the bleeding and the havoc, not define our
> time in history.
