Day of Remembrance

Several local religious organizations are planning a Day of Remembrance to mark the 61st anniversaries of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. A film, Barefoot Gen, about a seven-year-old boy who survived the bombing of Hiroshima will be shown at Channing-Murray Foundation, 1209 W. Oregon, Urbana on Sun. August 6 at 3 PM. Light refreshments will follow the film. A vigil featuring drumming, silent meditation, and prayers from various religious traditions will begin at 5:30 PM. The public is invited to attend.

The film, Barefoot Gen, is based on four graphic novels by Keiji Nakazawa, who was a boy when the atomic bomb destroyed his home city of Hiroshima. The film describes the stress on Gen and his family during the war, as well as the devastating losses to the family after the bomb was dropped. Although the film is an animation, it is not suitable for children. Viewers should be warned that the scenes following the bombing are graphic and disturbing. The story of Gen, nevertheless, is one of resiliency and hope.

Cosponsors of the event are Urbana-Champaign Friends Meeting, Channing-Murray Foundation, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Social Action Committee, First Mennonite Church of Urbana, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and AWARE
