Just a note: a letter circulated among several current
and former elected officials recently to Mr. Tatman
encouraging him to meet with the unions about this
hotel project and do the right thing.  I believe about
two dozen signed it, including city council members
from Champaign and Urbana and County Board members,
current and former.  Mr. Tatman wrote back a hasty
letter basically telling them to butt out, mind their
own business and reminding them that he pays a lot of
taxes around here.

Well, so do we.  Collectively, union members and
supporters pay quite a bit.  Not that we believe he
could buy special dispensation anyway, to do as much
damage in the community  - labor standards or other
social concerns - as he pleases.  But besides that, as
the union response reminded Mr. Tatman:

HE GOT TAX BREAKS FOR THIS VERY HOTEL PROJECT!  

He gets them all the time for developments.  But he
feels he owes the community nothing in return even for
that, not to mention the permission - which is the
community's to give or withhold - to build these
projects in the first place.

So, to make a long story short, this is about the
needs and the welfare of the community vs. one
individual's desire to take all he can get without
responsibility.
