[Peace] emails

I'm posting this response to 'peace-discuss' (while including a blind carbon
copy to 'peace'). Further discussion should probably NOT take place on the peace
list (which is generally reserved for announcements, calls to action and meeting
minutes).

: norm for other lists.

That may be, but other lists may not be particularly interested in being open,
welcoming and inclusive to the general community. I think it comes down to that
question - are we willing to tolerate a bit of stray junk e-mail in order to
keep the door wide open to messages from the community at large?

While Randall mentioned the down side
: of this being that outsiders cannot post a timely event, how
: often does that happen?

Checking over the last 18 months, it seems to happen on average about 2 or 3
times a week. Most of the messages come from either:

1. Other groups and institutions (e.g. Allen Hall Unit One, CIMIC (Central
Illinois Mosque and Islamic Center), CU Citizens for Peace and Justice (via
Carol and Aaron Aamons), Coalition against Coke Contracts, VEYA (Visionaries
Educating Youth and Adults), Catholic Worker, Traprock Peace Center) who want to
communicate information about their organization (and its events) to AWARE folks
(without subscribing).

OR

2. Individuals who have occasion to communicate to AWARE about events or issues,
but don't have any interest in subscribing (e.g. Patricia Avery, Brandon
Bowersox, Prof. Stephen Hartnett, Prof. Ken Cuno and other lesser know
individuals).

In addition, sometimes messages posted to peace or peace-discuss are
cross-posted to other groups (such as prairiegreens or ucprogressives-discuss).
Then if someone on those other lists responds to the message, their contribution
does get posted to peace or peace-discuss by virtue of the fact that posting is
not closed off to non-subscribers.

I would not be in favor of impeding the above communication lines between AWARE
and the greater community.

And for those who manage two email
: addresses, they are probably computer savvy enough to
: register both email addresses.

Sure, but they might wind up with two copies of every peace or peace-discuss
post in their Inbox as a result. Then they need to figure out how to resolve
that, which is not quite as easy (that prospect will be at least be inconvenient
to most and formidable to some).
