a. Aware Presents
i. Coming soon: Karen Yarborough & Paul Street this coming Friday
ii. Mort will introduce Paul Street on the Public Square
Thursday on WILL
b. Panels: 3 leading up to November elections
i. October 10th, 20th, 26th reserved at Town Hall
ii. Topic: U.S. Policy in the Middle East: What it Should Be.
iii. Preference for non-AWARE members to be panelists
iv. Frank was in charge of finding panelists- after difficulty
and disagreements we are left with two possible panelists for
the Israel Panel: Frederic Jaher, History professor at UIUC &
Jamal Nassar, professor and chair of Politics and Government
department. Discussion: important that many sides be
represented & agreement that these panels are important- lets
do all three if we can.
v.AWARE PRESENTS will plan these panels and will meet Monday night at 7 pm
at Durl Kruses house, 2007 George Huff.
c. Financial Report
i. Farmers Market raised $90.10.
ii. Current Balance: $2,060.19
d. Church Presence
i. Pastor very offended last Sunday
ii. Idea to flyer at the last 15 minutes of sermon at the
Vineyard next Sunday at 11.45 am
iii. Time may change- Durl will send out an e-mail.
e. Anti_racism
i. Unity March (October 7th) has asked for AWARE sponsorship
and a monetary donation.
ii. Proposal to give $50 and be a sponsor: passed
iii. Patrick Thompsons trial has been moved to November 22nd
f. Counter-Recruitment
i. Letter distributed this week with difficulty but
successfully to all of the staff at Centennial High School
ii. Will also be distributed to staff at Central High School
iii. Working on having face-to-face discussions with the
principals of all local high schools to ask them the nine
questions about their recruitment policies and what they will
allow AWARE to do.
iv. Discussion about Foreman column in News Gazette and subtle
promotion of the military to elementary school children.
v. Anti-Recruitment meeting Thursday (Mort will send out e-mail)
g. Student Groups
i. AWARE-like group exists now at UIUC
1. suggestion about students being on panels
ii. Working on high school student groups
iii. Need to work with Parkland as well
h. Neighborhood Canvassing (about the referenda on the November
ballot)
i. Stewart and Ricky Baldwin will coordinate for Champaign
ii. Durl Kruse will coordinate for Urbana
1. People should mark on maps which areas they canvass
2. Uni High Activism Club may help canvass in Urbana
(will discuss at UHACs meeting Monday)
IV. New Ideas
a. Public I would like people to submit articles addressing the
issues on the referenda, especially a perspective against the
immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq
b. Panel on net neutrality on October 25th, 7 pm at the IMC- need
cosponsors, a $25 donation, and help with advertising, setting up.
i. Suggestion: citizen voice to add to the politician and
entrepreneur voices on the panel
ii. Proposal to cosponsor: passed
iii. Will decide about the monetary donation next Sunday
c. On Monday, September 4th former AWARE members Zaid and Hibba
were surrounded by police cars at a gas station and Zaid was told
he was wanted from an FBI terrorist list.
d. Proposal: Film 500 Miles to Babylon can we get it to show in
Urbana Champaign?
