This is a reminder about a talk to be given at the U-C Friends Meetinghouse on June 29 at 7 PM on the African Great Lakes Initiative. This innovative organization does remarkable work in healing individuals and communities from the trauma of genocide. Here are the details
.

Speakers from African Great Lakes Initiative

David Zarembka, coordinator of African Great Lakes Initiative, Cecile Nyrimana of Rwanda, and Hezron Masitsa of Kenya will speak on the topic, “Healing from Deadly Violence” on Friday, June 29 at 7 PM at the Urbana-Champaign Friends Meetinghouse, 1904 E. Main, Urbana. Donations for African Great Lakes Initiative will gladly be accepted.

African Great Lakes Initiative is a Quaker-based organization promoting peace activities at the grassroots level in the Great Lakes region of Africa. This area, named for several large lakes, including Lake Victoria, includes the countries of Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Cecile Nyiramana is the Head of the Women’s Department of Rwanda Yearly Meeting of Friends and leader of Women in Dialogue, which brings Hutu women whose husbands are in prison and Tutsi women survivors of the genocide together to discuss their common problems. As a Tutsi survivor whose Hutu husband is in prison, Cecile belongs to both groups.

Hezron Masitsa is a member of Friends International Centre on Ngong Road where he is a lead facilitator with the Alternatives to Violence Program in Nairobi. He is also the Assistant Clerk of Quaker Peace Network-Africa.

Joy Zarembka, David’s daughter, will also be present with her recently published book, The Pigment of Your Imagination. Joy traveled to four distinct countries in an effort to explore different interpretations of racial identity in various parts of the world.

David Zarembka, Cecile Nyiramana, and Hezron Masitsa will be interviewed by David Inge on his radio show, FOCUS 580, at 11 AM on June 29.
