Dear Subscribers to CIMIC Event List,
Greetings! I want to bring to your attention 3 upcoming events, two at
CIMIC and one on campus.
CIMIC Friday Seminar on Friday the 18th of April
Title: Environmental injustice -- locally and globally
Time: 7:45 PM
Speakers:
Ken Salo, Dept. of Urban Planning, UIUC
Ruby Mendenhall, Dept. of Sociology, UIUC
Carol and Aaron Ammons, CU Citizens for Peace and Justice
The panelists will talk about the phenonmenon of environmental
injustice (esp. against minorities) whereby minority and poor
communities are subjected to dumping of toxic substances and other
such practices. Locally, the most glaring example of this is the toxic
plot of land left behind by Ameren near 5th and Hill area (a
pre-dominantly African-American area). The panelists will also
highlight similar injustices that Ken Salo saw in his native South
Africa when he went over winter with his students.

CAS/MillerCom Lecture Series on Campus
Thursday 24th of April
Title: Protecting the Prophet: Understanding Muslim reactions to the
danish Cartoon Controversy
Speaker: Lawrence Rosen, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of
Anthropology, Princeton University
Time and Location:
4:00 pm
Third Floor, Levis Faculty Center
919 West Illinois Street, Urbana
UniversiTy of Illinois
In 2005-06 cartoons depicting the Prophet
Muhammad led to protests by Muslims worldwide.
The controversy became local when the Daily Illini
published several of the cartoons. Professor Rosen
will discuss why Muslims feel so intensely that they
must protect the Prophet, and why the Prophet,
seen not just as a messenger, war leader, and
arbiter, but also in a master-disciple relationship
proves the rule of necessary deference by being the
most exceptional social tie of all.
