Monday, Jan. 28th, 6:00pm, Illini Union room 314
Derrick Jensen (www.derrickjensen.org) writes about the unsustainability
of our industrial civilization, about the widespread violence it requires,
about the natural world, about creativity. Among his books are
"As the World Burns: 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Stay in Denial",
"Endgame", "Strangely Like War: The Global Assault on Forests",
and "A Language Older Than Words".
One of the reviewers of Endgame is Howard Zinn, who said of him,
"Derrick Jensen is a rare and original voice of sanity in a
chaotic world. He has wisdom and wit, grace and style, and is a
wonderful guide to a good life beautifully lived."
Thanks to Carl for mentioning this on WEFT!

Alfred Ivy, running for State's Attorney

I'm not sure what the format will be, but if you're
concerned about what the State's Attorney does or should do,
please bring your questions!

[10] Sun Feb 17th, 3pm, Uni YMCA: Stephen Kinzer on
US confrontation with Iran and the need for diplomacy
See the peace tour web site,
http://www.follyofattackingiran.org/
The Bush Administration continues to deploy rhetoric of
confrontation against Iran, including the threat of military
force. Americans are being told that Iran is on the brink of
developing nuclear weapons, supports terrorism, is helping to
kill American soldiers in Iraq, and is determined to destroy
Israel. Therefore, the reasoning goes, we must prepare to attack
Iran.
Stephen Kinzer, the award winning author and former foreign
correspondent for the New York Times rejects this argument.
He, along with a diverse group of other experts on Iran,
Congressional leaders and military experts are traveling
across the country to counter the message from Washington
and to present options for a more rational foreign policy
towards Iran.

[11] Tue Feb 19th, 7pm, SIU Edwardsville:
poet Naomi Shihab Nye speaks in
"The Middle East: A Humanity Misunderstood /
Understanding Cultures through Literature & Poetry"
series
Naomi Shihab Nye wrote the poem "Red Brocade",
that we've been talking about posting a piece of on
C-U buses. She is the second of four speakers in this
interesting-sounding series organized at SIU Edwardsville.
Each speaker posted a blurb to illustrate their point of view:
here's Ms. Nye's:
Whenever you love something or somebody, it means that you have to
extend yourself, you have to grow - get a little larger. You can't
stay in your little comfortable spot. It's a challenge -- it's a
risk, and -- whether it's loving another culture far away that has
suddenly been represented by an act of violence -- or whether it's
loving another person -- it always involves all kinds of growing."
