This letter is proposed (or a variation of it) for you to send to your alma
mater, should you have one. It was addressed to Quakers to write and send,
but is applicable to anyone with a college degree or two. You are welcome
to use Quakerfinder and find a Quaker Meeting within a radius of your school
and send them a letter too, as Quakers everywhere are apt to be in a mood to
do counter recruitment. Otherwise, you might want to locate anti-war groups
near your college/university and contact them.

Friends,

With the approval of Peace and Service, I invite you to oppose military
recruitment on the campus of the college or university where you studied, by
writing a few letters. I recently sent the following letter to the
presidents of the college and the university of which I am an alumnus:
Universities
are now legally required to allow military recruiters on campus. Military
recruiters attract volunteers with deceptions and half-truths, concealing
the many personal and social costs of participating in war. I hope you will
allow and encourage the distribution of counter-recruitment information at
[your university] when recruiters are on campus. Information that makes
clear what the recruiters conceal can be obtained from several
organizations, a partial list of which is available at
www.counter-recruitment.org . I sent copies of the letter to Friends
meetings in the vicinity of the college and the university, hoping that they
will contact the educational institutions to support counter-recruitment.
Best would be a table with counter-recruitment information, prominently
available whenever military recruiters are on the campus.

I invite you to send comparable letters to your alma mater(s) and to Friends
meetings near those institutions. You can get contact information for those
meetings at www.quakerfinder.org . This is a small step we can all take
toward opposing the ongoing militarization of our society.

Peace,

Jay Mittenthal

*"It is a revolutionary world we live in. Governments repress their people;
and millions are trapped in poverty while the nation grows rich; and wealth
is lavished on armaments.

"For the fortunate among us, there is the temptation to follow the easy and
familiar paths of personal ambition and financial success so grandly spread
before those who enjoy the privilege of education. But that is not the road
history has marked for us.

"The future does not belong to those who are content with today, apathetic
toward common problems and their fellow man alike. Rather it will belong to
those who can blend vision, reason and courage in a personal commitment to
the ideals and great enterprises of American society."
