Tonight at 10pm on channel six the C-U Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort presents a
road-company version of the McLaughlin Group -- not a sporadic finite simple
group, as mathematicians might think, but a weekly public affairs program
cablecast on Urbana Public Television.

The group is finite but large, as attendance is sporadic, and tonight includes

   --Karen Medina describing upcoming local events, as recorded by Randall
Cotton at the last AWARE meeting;
   --Conrad Wetzel reporting on a successful panel on post-traumatic stress
disorder, sponsored by AWARE;
   --Barbara Kessel announcing events involving the "U.S. war corporation,"
Blackwater;
   --Ron Szoke wondering "Why did he do it?" and perhaps accepting Iago's (and
Bush's?) motiveless malignancy;
   --Wayne Johnson reflecting on the fate of the Republic at the "Republican
National Convention" [sic];
   --David Harley considering the American murder of civilians in Afghanistan;
   --and finally Mort Brussel offering some animadversions on electoral acumen,
with yr. obdt. servt. answering in kind.

Tonight's program was supposed to conclude with a statement by the Brazilian
journalist Pepe Escobar, who writes for the excellent Asia Times Online. (His
prescient article, "Get Osama! Now! Or else...", was published by ATO two weeks
before the attacks of 11 September 2001.) Time ran out, then as now, first as
tragedy and then as farce, but his curtain line (so to speak) is worth quoting:

"McCain and Obama are on the same wavelengths. What the US establishment wants,
no matter who is elected in November, is still full-spectrum dominance."
