45 E. University, Champaign.

In response to a call from to action from national Jobs with Justice,
and lots of expressions of local interest, we are holding a rally
tomorrow in opposition to the Bush Administration's proposal to bail
out Wall Street for $700 billion, under the slogan, protect Main
Street, not Wall Street. Gather at 5pm, Illinois Terminal, 45 E.
University, Champaign.

Let's say no!

1) 10/1 5pm: Protect Main Street, Not Wall Street! Illinois Terminal,

2) Employee Free Choice Act: 500 card goal by the inauguration
The U.S. labor movement - including the AFL-CIO, Change to Win, and
Jobs with Justice - has set a goal of delivering one million cards to
the next President in support of the Employee Free Choice Act on
Inauguration Day. At our last meeting we set a local goal of
collecting 500 cards. We'll have cards at the rally tomorrow. Please
return cards to me, Ricky, or Gene.

3) Community Shares Fall Drive at UIUC
The fall drive is on at UIUC. You can donate to Central Illinois Jobs
with Justice through Community Shares! All donations will come back to
our chapter.

4) UI Labor Update
The Campus Union coalition held a rally of all the unions and
supporters on "move in day" at PAR, supported by Jobs with Justice.
The unions have asked for an official explanation of why the
University's wage increase is so low. Some of the unions have
reopeners coming up.

5) House Bill 311, single payer health insurance in Illinois
CCHCC held a local forum on HB 311, single payer health insurance in
Illinois, co-sponsored by Rep. Jakobsson. Bill is supported by Speaker
Madigan, came through the task force that was set up by the
legislature. Rep. Jakobsson is not yet on the bill. National health
care reforms have started at the state level in the past; that's also
how they got single-payer in Canada.

6) Unity March, October 4/poverty referendum, Champaign
Oct 4 (Saturday) 11AM, Corner of Randolph and Green Streets, Champaign.
This year's march will focus on supporting the November ballot
referendum asking for a small property tax increase to help fund a
partial restoration of Champaign Township "General Assistance"
financial support for the city's poorest residents.

7) Dan Kenney on privatization, October 10
Dan Kenney of Clearwater: "Outsourcing our Sovereignty - Blackwater and
the Privatization of War".
7PM-9PM Urbana City Council Chambers (400 S. Vine St., Urbana)

8) Immokalee Workers got Whole Foods to sign
According to an agreement signed this month, Whole Foods Market will
support the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' "penny a pound" demand for
tomatoes purchased from Florida. This is CIW's first agreement in the
supermarket industry.

9) AFSCME Heartland workers locked out in Effingham

After a year on strike, workers at Heartland Human Services in
Effingham made a strategic decision to return to work and continue the
fight for a fair contract from inside. But management had other ideas
and locked them out, saying they could not return until there was a
contract in place. Management continues its refusal to sit down and
negotiate. The workers are back on the picket lines.

10) UI Labor class: Building and Re-Building the Labor Movement
Tuesday nights, 6-8:30, October 14-December 16
With Joe Berry, Eric Westlund, Helena Worthen, Monica Bielski and Ed
Hertenstein.
Contact: Helena Worthen, hworthen at uiuc.edu

11) UAW reaches tentative agreement at Mitsubishi in Bloomington
We had heard that the UAW local at Mitsubishi in Bloomington had voted
to authorize a strike but were still in bargaining. They have reached
a tentative agreement which they are voting on this weekend.

12) Illinois Labor says no to a Constitutional Convention
According to the Illinois Constitution, there must periodically be a
referendum on whether to hold a Constitutional Convention. That
referendum is on the ballot this November. The Illinois AFL-CIO, SEIU,
IEA, and IFT are all calling for a "no" vote. Opponents of a
Constitutional Convention fear that anti-discrimination protections in
the Constitution could be re-opened if there is a Convention.

13) Sales tax referendum: IEA says yes
There will be a sales tax referendum on the ballot in Champaign County
in November, to pay for capital improvements in the schools (e.g.
making sure that parts of buildings don't fall down and hurt people.)
IEA urges support, and other local unions are supporting the campaign.

14) New and returning officers on the Executive Committee
Gene Vanderport of IEA and Claudia Lennhoff of CCHCC have agreed to
continue as co-chairs. Rick Prince of AFSCME, Justus Fortado of SEIU,
and Barbara Kessell of the Friends Meeting have agreed to serve. All
five were elected at the last meeting.

15) Next meeting October 25 (Note: Not Third Saturday!)
Next meeting: Saturday, October 25, IEA office, 10 AM.
