Hope and History: Past and Present Burdens of Race
"Leaders make history," C.L.R. James remarked, "but only such history
as it is possible to make." Such wisdom matters as we now imagine new
possibilities for freedom in the U.S. Drawing on his new book,
"How Race Survived U.S. History," Roediger captures past moments when
emancipation seemed imminent and assesses the weight of history on the
future we can make.
