In ambiguous celebration of the fact that -- in spite of his mendacious anti-war
stance -- President Barack Obama has approved sending roughly 12,000 troops to
Afghanistan -- 8,000 Marines and a 4,000-soldier Army brigade, plus support
troops -- "AWARE on the Air" tonight presents a discussion of the war and the
economy: 10pm on UPTV, cable channel 6.
We begin with some upcoming anti-war events, locally and nationally, from
Randall Cotton's minutes of this week's AWARE meeting. (Meetings are every
Sunday night 5-6:30pm in the basement of the old post office in Urbana; all are
welcome.)
Wayne Johnson begins with "Funk & Wagner" -- abject fear and the economic
twilight of the gods -- and yr. obdt. servt. draws some connection to the
propaganda for the war, Obama's for killing people in AfPak being notably more
puerile than Bush's for the Iraq invasion. As Noam Chomsky points out,
"...Obama looks more aggressive and violent than Bush. The first acts to occur
under his administration were attacks on Afghanistan and in Pakistan, both of
which killed many civilians and are building up support for the Taliban and
terror. He wants to extend the military side of the war. There is an Afghan
peace movement, which is calling for a reduction or an end of terror. President
Karzai has pleaded with the United States not to carry out attacks that will hit
civilians and, in fact, has demanded a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign
forces, American forces, but that’s just totally disregarded and the
opportunities for a peaceful settlement are just ignored ... It’s also spilling
over into Pakistan, naturally, which is really dangerous. Pakistan, by now, is
partially under the control of the radical Islamist elements that Reagan helped
install there. It’s an extreme danger for Pakistan and actually for the world,
since Pakistan has nuclear weapons."
