Local solidarity is important.  Union busting disgusting - especially at a state university.  Jobs with Justice will be there.

**PLEASE FORWARD**

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Please join us on Thursday, July 23 for an informational picket of the UIUC Assembly Hall, to show solidarity with local workers who are being denied jobs at the U of I Assembly Hall.

The UIUC Assembly Hall has hired out-of-state non-union workers to do a job that local workers could do and are willing to do.

This informational picket is being organized by members of the local stagehands and riggers union, I.A.T.S.E. Local #482.

You can help by:
1. Attending the picket; and
2. Forwarding this message to others and asking them to attend.

Please read below to learn more about:
- the purpose of the picket
- details of the picket, including parking
- background on the situation (be sure to read this!)

PURPOSE OF THE PICKET:

The purpose of this informational picket is to educate the public about the hiring practices of the University of Illinois Assembly Hall and to demand that the UIUC Assembly Hall change its hiring practices! The University of Illinois Assembly Hall is denying jobs to local workers by hiring out-of-state non-union employees to engage in stagehand and rigging work. These out-of-state employees receive non-union wages and substandard benefits. The University of Illinois Assembly Hall's hiring decision denies jobs to local residents of our community who are qualified, unionized, and available to work, and who specialize in the particular jobs for which the U of I Assembly Hall has hired.

BACKGROUND:

The University of Illinois Assembly Hall is denying jobs to local workers by hiring out-of-state non-union workers.  The UIUC Assembly Hall has hired a non-union contractor and non-union crew to overhaul (removal and replacement) its the hoist system, (rigging).

Key points:

** The University of Illinois Assembly Hall is denying jobs to local workers by hiring out-of-state non-union workers.

- The University of Illinois Assembly Hall has hired out-of-state non-union employees engaged in stagehand     and rigging work at this location. They receive non-union wages and substandard benefits for their work.

- These non-union wages and substandard benefits constitute a threat to the wages and benefits     established by this union, and to future wages of other Illinois workers.

- Ultimately, the payment of non-union wages and sub-standard benefits is harmful to all workers, whether or not they are union workers, and will lower the standard of living for all of us in this community.

- The University of Illinois Assembly Hall's hiring decision denies jobs to local residents of our community     who are qualified, unionized, and available to work, and who specialize in the stagehand and rigging work     for which the U of I Assembly Hall has hired the out-of-state non-union employees.

- At all times, but especially during these times of economic hardship, when local working families are     struggling and our economy is hurting, our community should be able to count on the University of     Illinois Assembly Hall to hire local residents who would spend their money locally, not out of state.

** The University of Illinois Assembly Hall is seriously compromising the safety of the public and workers by cutting corners.

-The safety of the public and workers depends on crucial safety measures. The U of I Assembly Hall is     allowing this work to be done without installing vital safety equipment that it agreed was essential,     following concerns raised by I.A.T.S.E. Local 482.

- The U of I Assembly Hall is allowing these non-union workers to ignore critical and mandatory safety     procedures for working at extreme heights.

- The safety of the public and the workers at the U of I Assembly Hall depends upon the skill and     qualifications of the people doing this stagehand and rigging work. Unfortunately, the U of I Assembly     Hall has chosen to hire non-union workers instead of the local skilled, qualified, and experienced     professionals of I.A.T.S.E. Local 482.

Please join I.A.T.S.E. Local #482 in calling on the University of Illinois Assembly Hall to change its hiring practices!

Thank you for your support!
