*DESCRIPTION: *The Domestic Violence Awareness Month
(DVAM) Community Speak-Out is a large-scale kick-off event to a series of
collaborative programming across multiple Student Affairs units aimed to
raise awareness around domestic violence both locally and globally. The
Community Speak-Out is intended to serve as a declaration of the campus
community’s resistance to violence and will offer attendees a chance
to speak out against domestic abuse, share their insights and personal
experiences, and heal.

The (DVAM) Community Speak-Out will feature a proclamation from Chief of
Police Barbara O'Connor, who will declare this October our campus annual
Domestic Violence Awareness Month and speak about building a community free
of violence, followed by some motivational words from public speaker, poet,
and DV survivor Monica Daye, who will also facilitate the open mic portion
of the event.

Students and community attendees will be given candles and domestic violence
awareness ribbons and keychains to carry throughout the month of October and
will be encouraged to participate both in the open mic, as well as, in our
These Hands Don’t Hurt Project which encourages students to trace their
hands on the sidewalks in front of the Alumni Center patio. *This program is
part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month programming at the University of
Illinois.
