After the Unity March...
The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx: A Day of Discussion
Saturday, Oct. 9, 2 PM-7 PM
Greg Hall R. 217
810 S. Wright St. (northwest corner of the main quad)

"Philosophers have merely interpreted the world...The point, however,
is to change it"--Karl Marx

Come discuss an alternative to a world of war, poverty and oppression.
Help understand the world, in order to get involved in changing it.

Session I: 2 PM-3:30 PM--The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx

Karl Marx and Frederick Engels believed that the only way to
fundamentally change society was through a social revolution and that
the working class was the force to lead that revolution. Are these
ideas still relevant today?

Session II: 3:45 PM-5:15 PM-- Why Capitalism Fails: Marxism and the
Theory of Economic Crisis

The world economy is struggling to come out of the worst economic
crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Marx and Engels, after
a long study of the way capitalism worked in the 1800s, wrote that
decreasing profits, unemployment, and recessions were inherent to the
way capitalism works. For decades pro-capitalist economists have
claimed that Marx and Engels were wrong and that capitalism has
overcome crises. Who is right?

Session III: 5:30 PM-7 PM--Marxism and Political Organization

Since Marx and Engels' time, socialists have formed organizations to
fight for a different kind of society. In the wake of the success of
the Russian revolution, many Marxist organizations have modeled
themselves on the Bolshevik Party, which led that revolution. Since
the atrocities of the Stalin regime, however, many leftists have
rejected the idea of a revolutionary party. Why do revolutionary
socialists still maintain that such a party is necessary? And how
should it organize itself?
