Latino Immigrant Lives: Reflections for Reform
[20th Annual Daniel S. Sanders Peace and Social Justice Lecture]

May 2, 2011
7:30 p.m.
Alice Campbell Alumni Center
601 S. Lincoln Ave Urbana, IL

Speaker: Dr. Cecilia Menjivar, Cowden Distinguished Professor, School
of Social and Family Dynamics Program in Sociology at Arizona State
University.

Dr. Menjivar's research examines the social consequences of different
forms of exclusion (legal, social, economic) and institutional,
symbolic, and political forms of violence. Menjivar looks at these
issues primarily within Central and Latin American contexts, focusing
on the issues of U.S.-bound migration and gender relations. Her
fieldwork in Guatemala yielded information about the effects of
multiple forms of violence on the social worlds of Ladinas and
indigenous women. She also studies the militarization of the U.S.
border and how it impacts immigrants' attempts to enter the country.

This program is free and open to the public.
