Tue, Sep 6, 6:00-8:30pm, Champaign Public Library

Showing of the film, "Pray the Devil Back to Hell"

"Pray the Devil Back to Hell is the extraordinary story of a small band
of Liberian women who came together in the midst of a bloody civil
war, took on the violent warlords and corrupt Charles Taylor regime,
and won a long-awaited peace for their shattered country in 2003.

As the rebel noose tightened upon Monrovia, and peace talks faced
collapse, the women of Liberia – Christian and Muslims united -
formed a thin but unshakable white line between the opposing forces,
and successfully demanded an end to the fighting– armed only with
white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions."

   (from the film's web site,

Not sure who's organizing this showing, but heard mention on WILL-AM.
   Does anyone know more??

Wed Sep 7, 7:00pm, IMC "community room" (hidden in IMC basement)

First (biweekly) meeting of a reading group for Michelle Alexander's excellent book,
"The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness".

James Kilgore <jjincu at gmail.com> is organizing the group:

This is the most widely read book in recent times on issues related
to prison, race and incarceration. Alexander tracks the history of
the rise in incarceration in the U.S. and in particular highlights the
horrendous impact of this policy on African-Americans. The group will
meet once every two weeks, beginning [September 7th 7pm]. The
date and time will be determined by the group's availability, though
it will be on a weekday evening. If you are interested or have some
ideas about how to promote this reading group, please let me know..

(The room is tricky to find. It's in the basement of the IMC
at Broadway and Elm, downtown Urbana. If you take the winding stairs
down from main floor, then go a few feet left, walk through the artists'
space (couches etc.) to a space with several doorways, and make
a quick 180-degree left turn, you'll be facing the Community Room door.

Or, if you enter from the Elm St. side (short stairway leading down
from street), follow the painted stripes on the floor, turning right
into the hallway opposite Books to Prisoners' office. At the end of
that hallway, the artists' space is on your right. Walk through that,
then turn sharply left as above.)
