Film: TAKING ROOT: The Vision of Wangari Maathai
Sunday, March 11 at 2:00pm at the Urbana Free Library
A special film showing in celebration of International Women's Day

TAKING ROOT: The Vision of Wangari Maathai, tells the dramatic story
of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act
of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the
environment, protect human rights, and defend democracy.

Through chilling first person accounts and TV-news footage, Taking
Root documents the Green Belt Movement’s dramatic political
confrontations in which Maathai and other Kenyan women endured violent
suppression and hunger strikes, and risked personal injury.
Contemporary cinema verité footage of the tree nurseries, and the
improved lives of the women and children who tend them, is testimony
to the power of Maathai’s vision and the positive change it has
brought about.

Two special guest speakers will follow the film:  Anne Lutoma, (UIUC
Ph. D Student from Kenya) and Teresa Barnes (Associate Professor,
Gender and Women's Studies UIUC).

Cosponsored by the University of Illinois Center for African Studies
and the African Students Organization.
