Some upcoming events for the first week of October 2012

Nada Alwadi will be a Unit One Guest-in-Residence at Allen Hall
Sept 30 - Oct 5 (see public events below)
* All of her events are open to the public and take place in Allen
Hall, 1005 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana.
* Nada Alwadi is a Bahraini journalist, writer, and researcher. She
has been working in print media since 2003 covering politics and human
rights issues in the Middle East. She holds a Masters degree in Mass
Communication with an emphasis on women's political empowerment in the
media, from the University of Maryland, where she was a
Humphrey/Fulbright fellow. Alwadi covered the recent crackdown in
Bahrain for several international media outlets including USA Today.
In 2011, she was one of the recipients of the first James Lawson Award
for Nonviolent Achievement by the International Center on Nonviolent
Conflict. Alwadi co-founded the Bahraini Press Association with other
prominent Bahraini journalists. The Bahraini Press Association seeks
to defend local and international journalists who have been attacked
or targeted by the Bahraini authorities.

The uprising in Bahrain, strategic nonviolence, media neglect, and US
influence and involvement.
** Tuesday, Oct 2
7pm – Challenging Stereotypes of Middle Eastern Women (in the South
Rec Room):  Involvement of women in the Arab Spring, status of women
in the Middle East, and Islamic feminism.
** Wednesday, Oct 3
7pm – The Game of the Media (in the South Rec Room)
How the media shapes our perceptions of the world, media ownership and
agenda setting, challenges of new media, and social media during the
Arab spring.
** Thursday, Oct 4
7pm – US Foreign Policy towards the Middle East and the US Elections
(in the South Rec Room)
Mistakes and challenges for US foreign policy and views of
Arab-Americans on the upcoming elections.

Wednesday, October 3
Democracy Now!'s coverage of the debate
As President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney square
off in the first presidential debate in Denver on October 3, Democracy
Now! will broadcast live from Denver with a special expanded
presidential debate from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. ET. We will air the
debate, pausing after questions to include equal time responses from
two presidential contenders who were shut out of the official debate:
Jill Stein of the Green Party and Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party.

Movie and Discussion: Drone Warfare

Description: 	Join BNCPJ in discussing deadly drone warfare and their
possible use for security and surveillance here in the United States.
We'll watch two short movies, both very illuminating, after which we
have a discussion. One movie is a Faultlines documentary and the other
was made by researchers of the topic.
