Another Restorative Justice event:  This is from the same series of 
telephone conferences, presented by the Peace Alliance ( 
http://dopeace.us/ ), that began on Sept. 5th with a conversation with 
Michelle Alexander (The New Jim Crow).

On *Thursday 10/4, *at *7PM Central time*, there'll be a conference call 
with Andrea Brenneke, lawyer and social activist, who organized a 
Restorative Circle process following the Seattle police killing of a 
Native American woodcutter in 2010.  Some of us met her when she visited 
C-U during the conference on Restorative Circles which Mikhail Lyubansky 
and others put together last year.

Andrea Brenneke (J.D. Harvard Law School ?92, BA University of 
Washington, ?88) is a passionate advocate for justice and facilitator of 
individual and community healing and empowerment. She practices civil 
rights and employment law at MacDonald Hoague & Bayless in Seattle.

A tenacious litigator and strategic negotiator, the results she obtains 
compensate her clients for violations of their legal rights and dignity 
and secure other types of injunctive relief and policy changes that make 
a lasting difference in society. Her litigation successes include 
substantial trial verdicts and settlements in sexual harassment, 
disability accommodation and discrimination, gender and race 
discrimination, retaliation, police and government misconduct. She 
supports employees through all types of work place disputes, contract 
negotiations, accommodations and claim reporting procedures. Andrea also 
facilitates creative solutions and negotiated resolutions to legal and 
social conflicts. Originally trained in negotiation at Harvard Law 
School, she now is a certified LR 39.1 mediator, a Restorative Circles 
practitioner, and an apprentice to Dominic Barter.

Life is "unity in diversity."  The human "family", for example, is 
reaching seven billion unique individuals, no two of us exactly alike 
either in body or mind; yet we are more than members of a species, we 
are one family; according to the wisest who have ever lived, when you 
get down below body and mind to consciousness, to spirit, we are one.

In the progressive world we are very strong on "diversity" - diversity 
is our strength, and must remain so.  Unity without diversity 
degenerates into stifling uniformity; but at the same time diversity 
without unity can be separateness. Gandhi's famous concept of "heart 
unity" is a clue for our movement: we should have unity of aspiration 
underneath the infinite variety of our projects and actions.

To bring out the unity underlying the  possibly millions of projects 
that make up what Paul Hawken has called "movements within a movement" 
Roadmap can give us a comprehensive strategy to focus the marvelously 
diverse energies of the progressive movement into a single, unstoppable 
force.  It includes a three-year plan to develop our inner capacities, 
build upon our experiences, including those of nonviolent activists 
around the world, and go from strength to strength until we are able to 
make a significant, and eventually decisive impact on the corporate 
system that is threatening the planet.

Its main features are:

  *   developing individual capacities as the ground of all our action,
  * progressing from this "inner work" to constructive program and then
    to resistance, and
  * holding nonviolence throughout.
